Does Seth MacFarlane just recycle his characters?
July 28, 2008 by Wendy Boswell
There’s an interesting post over at Dromble that puts forth the premise of Seth MacFarlane basically recycling every character he’s got through all three of his shows: Family Guy, American Dad, and now The Cleveland Show. For instance:
- Talking Animals: We’ve got Brian, the fish in American Dad, now talking bears in Cleveland.
- Snotty Character that Wisecracks: Again, we’ve got Stewie, the alien, and the little kid in Cleveland.
- Moronic Dads: Peter, dad in AD, and Cleveland.
- Voice of Reason: Always, always the mom.
The post really made me think, quite frankly. Is Seth really coming up with any new material, or is he simply repackaging the same characters?

Who cares? So long as it’s funny. Try not to miss the point.
its true…but the simpsons just recycled the flintstones…and it goes deeper….always with the fat dad,the wife he couldnt really get in real life, a smart kid and a dumb kid….always at least one boy and one girl bart=chris(dumb)
lisa=stewie(smart)
milhouse=Meg(who cares?)
I always knew Seth was recycling his stuff. Right now it’s all about the money. As for the guy saying as long as its funny, you can’t expect Seth to be constantly funny when he’s working on 3 different shows at the same time.
you cant expect it…but it always is…whether it be original or recycled,it’s always funny…but…you can also take this argument to characters within just one show…

So what I’m hearing from you guys is that yes, you agree that Seth recycles, but as long as he does it well, it’s okay.
Right?
BOLD Statement on the Flintstones/Simpsons comment. Can you follow up on that? The Flintstones had one kid….and was Fred really that fat?
yes…fred was fat…but with the flintstones…i was just pointing out the fat dad and skinny,hot wife

interesting point about the fat dads and hot wives. Could this be a common fantasy that the writers are playing into? Targeting the demographic, so to speak?
It’s a formula that’s been working for years, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
i think we’re missing the point…Seth’s shows all kick ass…and if he recycles,its even better…because if you like one, you like them all
