Play It Again, Brian – recap
March 3, 2008 by Wendy Boswell
Last night was “Play It Again, Brian”; and while I always like seeing more of Brian, I really have to say that it definitely was NOT one of the best Family Guy episodes. Here’s the highlights:
- Peter is a douche.
- Brian is in love with Lois.
- Brian wins an award for writing, takes Lois and Peter to Martha’s Vineyard, Peter is drunk the entire time so Brian and Lois spend lots of time together.
- No, they don’t have sexy time THANK YOU GOD.
- For some inexplicable reason, Peter and Lois leave their children in the care of Herbert the Pedophile.
The whole “Spirit of Massachusetts” thing made me want to throw something at the TV; it honestly felt like lazy writing. And the cancer joke was painfully unfunny. Didn’t Family Guy used to be smarter than this? I give it a C-.

Holy crap! I write for b5 and I didn’t even know about this site! I was looking for a video clip of Alec Baldwin breast feeding his brothers from “I take thee Quagmire” and came across you in Google.
Awesome site!
I thought the Play It Again, Brian episode kinda sucked. It’s was just flat. I thought the funniest parts were Stewie calling Brian to ask questions about Scattergories, like if Nyquil can be considered a drink.
I loved “Play It Again, Brian” for the most part, but I didn’t like the cancer scene with the guy who’s camouflaging his bald head with a scarf.
But I LOVED “The Spirit of Massachusetts” song and the whole parade song scene at the end. I think it’s really fun and I just love seeing Peter, Brian, and Lois singing as all the people are waving and parading.
I also love Lois’ elegant, understated reaction to Brian reading his essay at the awards banquet. I loved seeing Lois sitting at the banquet by herself, wearing an elegant string of pearls, her hand gently folded on the table, serenely touched by Brian’s loving and eloquent “Grace” essay about her.
I also like the scene where the old man is reading a story to Chris in bed… and Chris is just looking at the old man in apparent disbelief. Chris’ non-verbal reaction is just so funny.
I also like how Stewie calls Brian on his cell phone, saying that he’s playing a word game with the old man and wondering whether Nyquil is a beverage.
I also like the visual effects of the Martha’s Vineyard local… the beautiful ocean view from the Griffin’s hotel room with its wide, open doors. There are so many visual nuances and such fine attention to detail down to the ripples in the water and the flickering lights.
I JUST LOVE “FAMILY GUY!”
This episode always makes me a little teary-eyed. I consider Lois Griffin to be the most attractive animated woman ever drawn, and hope to someday meet her real-life counterpart. So the day that Brian spends with her at the resort is one I can only dream of having. Those scenes of Brian with Lois are both touching and humorous.
As for the rest of the episode: As the other person commented, Lois was very elegant all dressed-up. Let me also add sophisticated and sexy at the same time. (How do you guys manage to make Lois so damned HOT when you dress her up?)
The parade at the end is either an example of either the wacky musical tangents the show is capable of, or an easy way to end the episode.
Peter’s antics are getting predictable. The kids had a few good lines though.
